Chicamacomico Banks Volunteer Fire and Rescue Chief Mike Daugherty stands at the end of hose line in the Rodanthe station’s driveway. The hose is positioned for the required annual hose testing.

Because of a really good turnout of volunteer firefighters, the testing took only three days instead of the usual four days.

Chicamacomico Banks has between 14,000 and 15,000 feet of hose, almost enough to stretch between the Rodanthe and Salvo stations.

During the annual test, Daugherty says some five-inch hose, which has a life span of 10 years, usually fails. However, every year a section of original five-inch hose from 1995 makes it through the test. It hasn’t been tested yet this year.
