Roseate spoonbill adds splash of color to Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge

The roseate spoonbill (Platalea ajaja) is not seen on the Outer Banks a great deal, but when they do pass through, they add a beautiful splash of color.

They are mostly found in southern Florida, Caribbean, Mexican coastline and South America.

Like flamingos, roseate spoonbills get their coloring from aquatic invertebrates and crustaceans they eat.

Of the six worldwide spoonbill species, the roseate spoonbill is the only one found in North America.
