A portion of the NC 12 roundabout associated with the new Rodanthe Bridge opened Friday, Nov. 19, 2021.

The speed limit through the roundabout is 20 miles per hour. Rumble strips alert southbound drivers of the new traffic pattern, which will be in place until the new bridge is opened.

The roundabout marks the southern end of the Rodanthe Bridge and its access ramp. The bridge is expected to open in February 2022.

The bridge is the long-term solution to the vulnerable S-turns where ocean overwash and flooding happen just north of the Rodanthe village line.

The roundabout has a 16-foot asphalt lane with a four-foot paved shoulder. Inside the asphalt lane is a concrete circle with a mountable curb. This area is called a truck apron. Tire tracks are visible on the concrete.

When the bridge is complete, the roundabout will be finished, extending the new asphalt circle into the existing southbound asphalt roadway.
