Southern Shores Boat Club (SSBC) members and guests gathered at the North Marina for an all-you-can-eat oyster roast earlier this month.

The SSBC operates under the Southern Shores Civic Association and, according to SSBC Commodore George Berry, a better name would be the Southern Shores Social Club. “Yes, some of us have a boat, or had a boat, or dreamed of a boat, or just have a ‘rubber ducky!’ Truth be told, more that 70% of us don’t have a boat! We gather to learn, eat, and have fun!” Berry said.

The event event drew 170 people for oysters, burgers, brats and drinks. It was a gorgeous sunny day for just one of many events the SSBC hosts throughout the year. Most months, club members meet at Duck Woods Country Club for a hearty breakfast and the opportunity to catch up with neighbors. Guest speakers are invited to each meeting. Past speakers and/or topics include Wicked Tuna OBX captains, Mid-Currituck Bridge engineers, The Rum Guys, Dare EMS, Master Gardner, Berlin Air Lift, identity theft, beekeepers, TOSS town manager and Oregon Inlet update. Buffalo City Distillery (including samples) is on the docket for 2022.

SSBC hosts four main events for club members at the SSCA North Marina, where attendance ranges from 120-180 persons: July Independence Day Weekend – low country boil; September Labor Day Weekend and Boat Parade – #1 AUCE jimmy blue crabs; November AUCE oyster roast; and December Christmas party, with possible “ugly sweater” contest, oyster stew, chili and cornbread. The club awarded prize money for the best decorated Labor Day Boat Parade winners. The club is planning on an adult and kids fishing and crabbing tournament next year.

“We manage attendance and never run out of food or drink – beer, wine, sodas, and water,” Berry said. “We all get smart, eat well, and have a good time. Come join us to meet your neighbors and have fun.”
