Sometimes visitors to Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge might hear a whinny from up in the trees. There’s no horse up there, of course, but a whinny sound is just one of several different calls made by the eastern screech owl. As seen in the photo, they also blend in well with their surroundings.
