Two local school districts have addressed reports of posts circulating on TikTok about threats against schools across the nation.

Currituck County Schools issued a press release Thursday night stating that the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, in conjunction with the NC Center for Safer Schools, had informed school districts across the state that warnings had been circulating across TikTok regarding threats against schools nationwide on Friday, December 17, 2021.

“We are extremely thankful for the tremendous amount of reports about the social media posts from our community,” stated the CCS release. “Discussions at the state and local level indicate that these threats are not imminent threats. Again, there are no known specific threats to our schools in Currituck County.”

Dare County Schools issued a statement Friday morning regarding the situation: “We are aware of the latest TikTok challenge circulating on social media and being widely reported by national news outlets. While there have not been any threats communicated towards Dare County Schools as a result of this trend, we take threats very seriously. Each of our schools has a full-time School Resource Officer, and we work directly with law enforcement to ensure that our campuses remain safe.”

Currituck County Schools will have additional law enforcement on campuses Friday “simply out of an abundance of caution.”

“While we may be busy celebrating the upcoming holidays, there are no breaks when it comes to ensuring the safety of our staff and students,” stated the Currituck release.
