Cameron Thompson, who serves as the information systems administrator for the Dare County Department of Health & Human Services, has been named Dare County Employee of the Month for December 2021. Thompson was presented the award by Chuck Lycett, director of the Dare County Department of Health & Human Services’ Social Services Division, at the Dare County Board of Commissioners meeting on December 6.

“Thompson began working for the Dare County Department of Health & Human Services in August 2020, bringing with him a wealth of knowledge about computer hardware, software and systems,” stated a Dare County press release.

“Within the first week he was off and running,” said Lycett. “Providing IT support to almost 200 individuals was not a challenge. He quickly acclimated himself to the many programs and started troubleshooting issues with staff to minimize workflow disruptions. He understands the importance of keeping the systems functioning and staff issues resolved so work can be completed. You may ask yourself, ‘What makes the work that Cameron does different?’ It’s how he does it. He’s organized, methodical and has the ability to adjust as needed. Cameron brought with him an incredible set of soft skills. His customer service skills are some of the best I have ever seen.”

During his presentation, Lycett also noted that Thompson took on his position when the Department of Health & Human Services was in the midst of a major construction and renovation project that included building a new addition that would join the department’s two existing facilities in Manteo together and also serve as a lobby and main entrance.

“We quickly learned of his construction skills and his prior experiences with commercial construction projects and office moves,” said Lycett. “He redesigned the IT rooms and worked closely with the company installing new internet wiring. He was assigned to work with the moving company moving office furniture each week. To create efficiency, he provided them with drawings of what needed to be moved where. He moved the staff’s computer equipment at least twice – and for some as many as six times. When desks were not available, he created temporary work stations. Ensuring staff computers are functional each day is his priority.”

In addition to recognizing Thompson’s technical skills and abilities, Lycett also highlighted his positive attitude and “pleasant personality.”

“He treats everyone the same, no matter if you are a supervisor or line staff,” he said. “Cameron listens to staff computer problems and patiently walks them through the steps needed to resolve the problem without making you feel inadequate or stupid. He accepts challenges and never complains. He always has a smile on his face – even while he is sweating after moving furniture and computers for hours. He maintains a calm demeanor in the midst of chaos. He has a great sense of humor. We are happy to have Cameron as a member of the Department of Health & Human Services team and are thankful for the contributions he has made in his short time with us.”
