The Swan Quarter Volunteer Fire Department (SQVFD) expressed congratulations to Ben Cahoon on his investiture as a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) College of Fellows. (www.aia.org)

Cahoon, of the Nags Head firm of Cahoon and Kasten Architects, PC, is a Hyde County native. He has been the architect for several SQVFD projects over the years, including expansion of the Swan Quarter facility in 2003 and the current new Lake Comfort Substation.

He has given his time and experience to help other local nonprofit organizations including Mattamuskeet Recreation and Wellness, Inc. This recently-formed group is undertaking the building of the Brandon Marshall Ball Field Complex behind the Mattamuskeet School campus in Swan Quarter.

Additionally, Cahoon has been the architect of record for many other Hyde County projects, the most recent being the rebuilding of the Ocracoke School following Hurricane Dorian in September 2019.

The AIA was founded in 1857 and has grown to over 95,000 members and over 200 chapters around the world. Only three percent of members have been elevated to the AIA College of Fellows. The mission includes advancing the profession of architecture and mentoring young architects. Headquartered in Washington, DC, the awards ceremony took place at the Kennedy Center on Wednesday, December 8.

SQVFD Fire Chief Jeffrey Stotesberry remarked: “AIA Fellows are recognized for their exceptional work and contributions to architecture and society and Ben has certainly exemplified those qualities and more in his work with our department and other organizations in Hyde County. We are pleased for him and proud of what he has accomplished.”
