Commercial harvest of scup now open

North Carolina Marine Fisheries Proclamation FF-5-2022 sets the harvest period and limits for the commercial scup winter I harvest period north of Cape Hatteras, in the Atlantic Ocean.

This commercial harvest period opened at 12:01 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2022 and will close at 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 30, 2022 or when the quota is reached, whichever occurs first.

To take, possess, buy, sell or offer for sale, scup must not be less than 9 inches total length.

To possess, sell or offer for sale no more than 50,000 pounds of scup per trip during the winter I commercial harvest period is permitted. The winter harvest season ends at 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 30, 2022 or when the quota is reached, whichever occurs first.

States the proclamation, “the intent of this proclamation is to maintain North Carolina’s compliance with the requirements of the joint Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council-Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission Summer Flounder, Scup and Black Sea Bass Fishery Management Plan.”
