Theatre of Dare, community theater for the Outer Banks, will hold auditions for Arsenic and Old Lace, a 1941 farcical black comedy by Joseph Kesselring on Wednesday, January 12 from 7-9 p.m. at the Dare Council Arts Council (old courthouse downtown), 300 Queen Elizabeth Avenue in Manteo.

“Arsenic and Old Lace is a perennial crowd-pleaser in community theaters, and for good reason,” says Jessica Sands, director of the show. “The story itself is hilarious as you watch the events unfold, and the characters will prove a delightful challenge for our local actors.”

“There are 14 roles of various ages and genders up for grabs. The play centers on two elderly sisters who are famous in their Brooklyn neighborhood for their numerous acts of charity. Unfortunately, their charity includes poisoning lonely old men who come to their home looking for lodging,” stated a Theatre of Dare news release. “The two women are assisted in their crimes by their mentally challenged nephew who believes he is Teddy Roosevelt. Matters get complicated when a second nephew, a theater critic, discovers the murders, and a third nephew appears after having just escaped from a mental institution.”

“We continue to observe CDC recommended pandemic protocols, so we’re asking that participants wear masks. Due to potential venue requirements, all those auditioning must also be fully vaccinated against COVID-19,” Sands continued. “As with most auditions, please be prepared to read excerpts from the script. And if anyone is interested in helping out backstage, we welcome them to stop by auditions.”
