Wilma Simmons Roughton, 89, of Columbia, died Friday, January 14, 2022 at Washington Regional Medical Center, Plymouth.

Mrs. Wilma was born in Tyrrell County on February 1, 1932 to the late Dempsey and Mariam Bateman Simmons.

She was a member of the Albemarle Church of Christ. She worked as a licensed practical nurse for the former Columbia Hospital, Washington County Hospital, and prior to her retirement for the former Plumblee Nursing Center in Plymouth.

She was a devoted worker who enjoyed doing for others, cooking, and selling Avon.

A memorial service was held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, January 18, 2022, at Bryan Funeral Service, Columbia Chapel. Dr. Allen Brickhouse officiated. A private inurnment followed at the family plot in the Soundside Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home immediately following the service.

Surviving are two sons, David O. Roughton of Plymouth, Joseph B. Roughton (Judy) of Asheboro; five grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren, and two sisters Dottie Simmons of Columbia and Lorraine Williams of Creswell.

She was preceded in death by an infant son Joseph Roughton; a daughter Jo Ann Patrick and four sisters.

Arrangements are by Bryan Funeral Service Columbia.
