Pound nets proclamation now in effect

North Carolina Marine Fisheries Proclamation M-3-2022 implements the pound net closure period in all Internal Coastal Waters except for Albemarle and Currituck sounds and their tributaries.

Effective 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2022, all nets were to have been removed from pound net sets. The closure is effective until midnight, Monday, Jan. 31, 2022.

“This action is being taken to further minimize interactions with threatened and/or endangered species in the pound net fishery,” states the proclamation.

The areas in the Albemarle Sound excluded are described as from the northwestern shore of Durant Island to a point near Point Harbor.

In Currituck Sound, the restrictions do not apply north of the Highway 158 Wright Memorial Bridge on the western shore running easterly along the south side of the bridge to a point on the east shore.
