First Flight wins conference swim titles

First Flight High School teams won both the boys and girls swimming championships January 26 at the Northeastern Coastal Conference meet at the Elizabeth City YMCA.

In addition to picking up two individual championships for First Flight with her performances in the 100 and 200 freestyle events, Maura Trivette was also a member of the winning 200 freestyle relay team.

Leading the Nighthawks boys team scoring effort was Brodie Nash, who captured two individual first places with wins in the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke events along with a leg on the winning 200 medley relay team.

Manteo’s Gwyn Benkusky was also a double individual winner with first place finishes in the 100 breastroke and 200 individual medley.

Girls team scores show First Flight the overall winner, gathering in 146 points, Manteo was second with 103 and Currituck third with 83. Other team scores include Camden’s 61, Pasquotank’s 46 points, John Holmes in sixth place with 30 and Northeastern trailing the field with 6 points.

Scores for the boys teams included First Flight as team champions with 169 points, Currituck a distant second with 115, Manteo in third with 60 points and fourth place Pasquotank with 56 points. Rounding out the field was Camden with 42, Edenton’s John Holmes with 10 pints and and Northeastern’s 6 points.

Teams now advance to the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Eastern Regionals at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary. Manteo, Camden, Pasquotank and Holmes competed in the 1A and 2A championships February 4 and First Flight and Currituck in the 3A division championships February 5. The State Championships are February 10-12, also in Cary.
