Let all that you do be done in love. – 1 Corinthians 16:14 ESV

A dear family friend passed a few years ago and left a huge void in many lives, especially mine. She knew me from birth and I considered her a second mother. We shared many laughs, tears and joys along the way. She was safe, wise and encouraging. In her cards or letters, she always closed by signing, “Love is All.”

What does that mean, “Love is All”? I believe it suggests that love is the blanket that covers all things. Showing, expressing, living in love can heal hard hearts, brokenness and offenses. And from my experience I believe it does exactly that. Today, we find ourselves in a divided, negative world. No filters on opinions that are all too freely given without respect or thought to the damage that may be done with words and actions. Sadly, negativity and name calling often penetrates the sanctity of our own inner circle. In seeking the definition of love, the one that spoke most to me was, “the brotherly concern for others.” What can we do to make a difference? A wise friend once told me to “love unloving people where they are at.” To also “attempt to see others the way you believe God sees them.” In doing this, love comes easier and discord is hopefully flushed out. It may take time. Does this mean that you are a doormat and weak if you choose not to fight back or defend yourself when attacked? Every situation is different, however, we are told that God is the avenger, He knows all and the truth will rise up each time. A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. John 13:34-35 ESV

If we practice love regardless of what is going on to us or around us, and we trust God to make things right, we are on the right path. Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. 1 John 4:7 ESV

I believe my friend left behind good words of wisdom. Love is all.
