Tournament final features Bear Grass and Cape Hatteras in Buxton

Both Cape Hatteras varsity basketball teams will play in the Atlantic Conference tournament finals Friday night, Feb. 18, 2022.

The final tournament games will be played at Cape Hatteras Secondary School in Buxton. Both games feature a match-up between Bear Grass and Cape Hatteras teams. The girls game is set to tip off at 6 p.m. with the boys game starting around 7:30 p.m.

To reach the finals, Cape Hatteras varsity boys defeated Columbia 72 to 57 in Buxton.

In an upset win, Cape Hatteras varsity girls defeated Ocracoke 48 to 38 in Ocracoke. The Ocracoke girls team entered the tournament undefeated.

In Buxton, a fast-break basketball game kept the boys score close for three quarters.

Cape Hatteras led at the end of the first quarter 16-12. By half-time, the Hurricanes were ahead by six points, 32 to 26.

In the third quarter, Columbia closed the Cape Hatteras lead to four points. But Cape Hatteras surged ahead in the final minutes and finished the quarter with an Ayden Paddock three-pointer at the buzzer.

Leading scoring for Cape Hatteras and the game was Paddock with 21 points. In double digits for Cape Hatteras also were Tripp Stephens with 18 and Dylan Waters with 10.

For Columbia, sophomore Ariyeah Spencer scored 18 and Jahcier Sykes 17.

Leading scoring for the Cape Hatteras girls team was senior Emma Del Monte. She scored 23 points, making four threes.
