The Dare County League of Women Voters will present a virtual viewing of the film “The Nine O’Clock Whistle” in partnership with LWVNC. Producers Willa Cofield and Karen Riley will join on Zoom on February 23 at 7 p.m.

“Director, Willa Cofield, showcases her own narrative along with the voices of her former students and civil rights organizers in this historic film,” stated the Dare LWV event announcement. “The film sheds light on the story of the dramatic cultural shift that rocked the segregated town of Enfield, NC in the mid-1960s.”

The announcement stated that as a young teacher in a segregated school in Enfield, Willa Johnson (now Cofield) was fired for teaching her students how to register to vote. “She fought this injustice with the help of the National Education Association, and won a trailblazing unfair teaching dismissal case,” stated the announcement. “Unable to find a teaching job after her dismissal, and after the Klan burned a 17-foot cross in her backyard, she moved to New Jersey, earned a Ph.D. in urban planning from Rutgers University, and became a documentary filmmaker and social justice activist.”
