The Don and Catharine Bryan Cultural Series will present “Enchanted April” on Sunday, March 6 at 4 p.m. at the R/C Kill Devil Hills Movies 10. Tickets are $10. The event includes an introduction and discussion of the film by Dr. Chris Palestrant, professor of music composition at Elizabeth City State University.

A media release from the Bryan Cultural Series states “’Enchanted April’ is a must see film perfect for couples of all ages . . . An award winning film, this 1991 movie is an often overlooked classic.”

The film takes place in an Italian castle overlooking the Mediterranean Sea and examines the lives of four English women unexpectedly thrown together.

“It all starts on a miserable, rainy day in 1922 London when Josie Lawrence as Lottie Wilkins and Miranda Richardson as Rose Arbuthnot, who are in the same ladies club but have never met, agree to share expenses at an Italian castle for the month of April,” states the release. “Needing two more women to share expenses, they take on the beautiful, rich and aloof Caroline Dester (Polly Walker) and the aristocratic Mrs. Fisher (Joan Plowright).

“The movie is unblinking in its depiction of an unhappy marriage with Alfred Molina playing Lottie Wilkins’ husband. In this scene Lottie has just told her husband she is going to Italy with her friend.

Mellersh Wilkins: This is outrageous, Lottie! You accepted an invitation from a friend without consulting me?
Lottie: I’m consulting you now!
Mellersh Wilkins: Well you can write her and just tell her you can’t go, it’s absolutely out of the question!
Lottie: I can’t do that!
Mellersh Wilkins: Why not?
Lottie: Because I don’t want to!

“The dialogue is understated, quick and highlights the differences among the women as in this interchange between Mrs. Fisher and Caroline.

Mrs. Fisher: That’s a beautiful dress…
Caroline: No I’ve had it a hundred years.
Mrs. Fisher: …but you must be very cold in it. It’s easy to catch a chill here after dark. You look as if you had nothing on underneath.
Caroline: I haven’t.

“Yet in the end, it all works out, and creates a marvelous journey that explores love, friendship and marriage.”

Tickets are $10 and may be purchased online at the RC Theater website or at the theater anytime it is open: Friday 3:30-10 p.m., Saturday 12:30-10 p.m.; Sunday 12:30-8 p.m. and Monday-Thursday 3:30-8 p.m.

“To protect our audience members, the Bryan Cultural Series will only sell 100 tickets for the show and encourages social distancing in the auditorium. Masks will be required for all audience members when they are not eating or drinking,” states the release.
