Shay Herring Clanton, a former resident of Hatteras Island, will be in the area from the mountains of Virginia to speak at the opening of her art show at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation on Kitty Hawk Road on March 6, 2022.

Her work is in watercolor and mixed media and includes some pieces from a recent trip to Buxton Woods. She taught drawing and painting at Mary Baldwin University.

Clanton lives in Deerfield, Va. on the border of the George Washington National Forest in the Appalachian Mountains. Her work is inspired by the rivers, streams and forests of rural Virginia, her family land in Alabama and her time spent on Hatteras Island, where she lived for 10 years. She paints in the field, attempting to capture the changes of light that evoke the spirit of a place, noted a UUCOB press release.

In addition, Clanton’s sister Lucinda Herring will give the talk during the service Sunday on her work as a green funeral director and a home funeral consultant and guide. “She will share the gifts of families and communities reclaiming the sacred task of caring for their own dead, and making choices at the end of life that care for each other and the earth, in more conscious, ecological and healing ways,” stated the release.

The service starts at 10:30 a.m. and the art talk starts at 11:45 a.m. There will be a reception with refreshments between the service and talk and all are welcome to attend. Herring’s book will also be available for purchase. Masks will be required inside. Call 252-202-9894 for more information.
