Tyrrell County Schools Superintendent Oliver A. Holley has announced his resignation effective June 30, 2022. Holley informed the Tyrrell County Board of Education at their February 22 work session.

In a letter to school board members, Holley stated that his “faith has always led me to understand that seasons of change are necessary to continue cultivating your gifts to better serve others. With that said, and after much reflection, I have determined that now is the appropriate season to pass the leadership torch as the superintendent of Tyrrell County Schools.”

The letter also stated that the decision was not “made lightly, but it is the right decision to allow the Board to select the next leader, who will continue to build on the work that we have done and take this district to the next level.”

Holley also noted that his time as TCS superintendent “has certainly been one of the best learning journeys of my career to this point. Serving alongside a talented team of educational leaders, teachers and, most of all, a wonderful community of students, families and residents have been the best part of this work.”

Holley also sent a letter to staff dated February 25, 2022 which highlighted many accomplishments:

“In our partnership, we have worked long hours and served our community passionately, during what many characterize as the most challenging time in public education. This partnership has yielded favorable outcomes and accomplishments that should be acknowledged and celebrated. Together we have accomplished the following:

• The organized effort to meet the needs of our community and students as a result of the unforeseen COVID-19 pandemic. This effort involved remote and virtual instruction, coordination of our COVID-19 meal delivery program, development of health, cleaning and safety practices, as well as strategic planning for a safe return to face to face instruction.
• The district acquired its first Cognia Accreditation in 2019 that guides a pursuit of excellence in the district. The accreditation process has allowed our district to identify improvement goals and produced opportunities to sustain the commitment to better learning outcomes.
• A consistent graduation rate from 2019 through 2021 that was higher than the state average.
• The alignment of our curriculum efforts via the partnership with the NCDPI CARES Act Team that has increased structure related to pacing guides, Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), and district benchmark testing efforts.
• The creation and certification of a Day Treatment Program to address the educational, social and emotional needs of our students that will be implemented in the future.
• The automation of our Human Resources and Finance Departments with the implementation of LINQ Software Systems.
• The purchase of staff laptops and other digital devices that increased accessibility to educational resources and pertinent instruction during school closures that were a result of COVID-19.
• The creation and implementation of the Wildcat Farm and the expanded course offerings in our CTE program.
• The expansion of our district’s athletic program that now includes golf, tennis and soccer.
• The expansion of the Pre-K program that was funded by the Ribbon of Hope Grant from NC GlaxoKlineSmith Foundation in the amount of $25,000.
• Increased diversity amongst the district’s certified staff members.”

The letter also expressed thanks to staff members “for dedication shown towards students, families and the community. This experience will carry me far into the future, and I am so proud to have served the community of Tyrrell County.”
