Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.  I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” – Psalm 91 NIV

This is a time of reflection. Many things out of our control are front and center in the headlines. Whether it is Mother Nature unleashing her fury, raging fires or man-made tragedies befalling hundreds, even thousands! There is much suffering right now in our world, our country, maybe even our own homes. How easy it would be to find a refuge away from all suffering and simply hide from reality. But a refuge like this doesn’t exist. There is no place we can go. While we don’t have that physical place to hide, we do have that spiritual refuge when we need to feel safe: the altar of God where He hears our petitions, eases our sorrow, receives our tears and loves us unconditionally. Psalm 91 has been hailed as a “Psalm of Protection” and I agree.

Taking Jesus by the hand and walking along the beach is what I think of in my minds’ eye when I need that great comfort. What would Jesus say to me? What should I do? How has God prepared me for a time such as this? If we have studied God’s Word, memorized the scripture, filled our heart and minds with His teachings, we can call on them for when things happen.

When a crisis hits, you can hardly remember your own name, but if those passages have taken root in your soul, they will rise up to comfort and guide you when needed. As in my case years ago, I was faced with a health crisis and realized I didn’t have the spiritual roots of faith to sustain me. I was lost. Maybe you are too. It is always the right time, the best time, the perfect time to open the Bible and allow the Holy Spirit to guide you. Psalms and Proverbs are wonderful. The Four Gospels. Prayers don’t have to be elaborate or perfectly penned. Just simple words from the heart is what is needed to open the communication with God. Keep learning. Keep growing. Remain faithful. He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge: his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. Psalm 91:4 NIV
