Fleetwood “Mitch” Mitchell, 82, of the 1300 block of Emory Place in Norfolk, Virginia, went to be with the Lord on March 16, 2022.  Mr. Mitchell was born in Old Trap, North Carolina, the son of the late Marvin Chester Mitchell and Maggie Pugh Mitchell of Manteo, North Carolina.

Mr. Mitchell graduated from Manteo High School, class of 1959. Upon completion of High School, Mr. Mitchell served in the Army, 101st Airborne from 1959 to 1962. Mr. Mitchell went on to earn his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute (Virginia Tech), Class of 1966. After completing his college degree, Mr. Mitchell worked at Mitchell’s Furniture Plant in Durant, Oklahoma in the capacity of Plant Manager.  Mr. Mitchell began his career with the United States Government in 1962 as an Electrical Engineer at Norfolk Naval Air Station (NAVAIR). Mr. Mitchell continued his distinguished career until finally retiring from PAXRIVER as an A6-B PROWLER Program Manager in 2004. Mr. Mitchell was awarded the Navy Superior Civilian Service Award, the Career Service Award for 40 years of service. It is also mentioned that Mr. Mitchell was a member of the Berkley Masonic Lodge #167.

Some of Mitch’s greatest joys in life were his family, friends, and his four legged friend Joe-Joe. Mr. Mitchell thoroughly enjoyed walking, talking, and sharing his love of cooking. He was an active member of the NAVAIR breakfast club and the neighborhood dog walkers.

Mr. Mitchell’s survivors include his wife and true love of over 60 years, married since 1961, Linda Sansone Mitchell, daughter of the late Mildred and Teddy P. Sansone of Norfolk, Virginia. Linda and Fleetwood have two sons, Michael Morris Mitchell and Bradley Thomas Mitchell. Grandchildren: Jared Thomas Mitchell, Benjamin Edmond Mitchell, Kelsey Lynn Mitchell, Brannon Ruth Mitchell, and Aria Jade Davis; beloved companion Joe-Joe, and numerous great nieces, nephews, and other family members. Mr. Mitchell is preceded in death by his cherished parents, four brothers, three sisters, and most recently deceased daughter-in-law, Nancy “Nan” Reichart Mitchell.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Monday March 21, 2022, at the Norfolk Chapel of H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments located at 1501 Colonial Avenue in Norfolk, Virginia. The memorial service will be presided over by the Reverend Willis Borrow. The family will receive extended family and friends at the funeral home beginning an hour prior to the scheduled service from 1 until 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to King’s Daughters, ACCESS College Foundation, or local charity of your choice.
