Rules for shrimp trawls established

North Carolina Marine Fisheries Proclamation SH-1-2022 establishes the mesh sizes for the trawl body and tail bag/cod end, bycatch reduction device and turtle excluder device requirements for taking shrimp with trawls in Pamlico Sound and the Pamlico, Bay and Neuse rivers where up to 220 feet of combined headrope is allowed.

The proclamation is effective July 1, 2022 and only applies to shrimp trawls. Skimmer trawls are exempt. Also exempt is a single test trawl net (try net) with a headrope length of 12 feet or less with a mesh size of one and one-half inch stretch mesh or greater with three conditions.

A shrimp trawl that must conform to the federal requirements for turtle excluder devices per a N.C. Marine Fisheries Commission rule.

“The intent of this proclamation is to require the use of approved Bycatch Reduction Devices that achieved at least a 40 percent finfish bycatch reduction in accordance with the N.C. Shrimp Fishery Management Plan Amendment 2,” states the proclamation.
