The Dare County Center in Manteo – a multigenerational facility that provides programs, activities and resources to citizens throughout Dare County – has officially been renamed as the Virginia S. Tillett Community Center.

On March 14, 2022, the Dare County Center signage on the building’s facade was replaced with new lettering, marking the facility’s official designation in honor of the longtime community leader and former elected official who passed away on October 7, 2021.

On November 15, 2021, the Dare County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution to formally recognize Tillett’s service and dedication to the Outer Banks community by renaming the facility in her honor.

A building dedication ceremony to celebrate the renaming is scheduled to be held at the Virginia S. Tillett Community Center beginning at 4 p.m. on May 12, 2022. The event will feature several speakers who will discuss the significant and positive impact that Tillett had on the Outer Banks community during her 30-plus years of service.

Members of the public are invited to attend the ceremony, which will feature live music performed by local band Just Playing Dixieland, as well as a cookout, games, crafts and activities, all of which will take place at the Wellness Park situated on the south side of the facility.

Those who attend the ceremony will also have the opportunity to partake in walk-through tours of the Virginia S. Tillett Community Center, which is located at 950 Marshall C. Collins Drive in Manteo.

“We want you to come ready to fellowship, dance, eat and have a lot of fun,” said Sandy Pace, who serves as director of the Virginia S. Tillett Community Center. “This is what Miss Virginia would have wanted, and she loved attending events like this at the center.”
