Multiple Manteo initiatives are progressing.

At its mid-March meeting, the town’s Board of Commissioners reviewed plans for fixing westside stormwater issues.

Mike Morway and John Delucia with Albemarle & Associates Ltd. presented schematics of plans to create a stormwater drainage system along Agona and Sir Walter Raleigh Street.

The plan eliminates a connection that combines stormwater draining from the Elizabethan with Agona. New stormwater pipe will replace compromised pipes along Agona. The Agona pipe then connects to the system coming around the Richard Etheridge circle to an outfall.

Morway said surveys are completed and the half the plans are finished. The design will be done in about two months. Construction will take three to four months.

The town’s 2022 Draft Comprehensive Land Use Plan is now out for comment. “We REALLY want to hear from you! This is YOUR plan! Send your comments to mdickerson@manteonc.gov or drop them off at Town Hall too if you like! We would love to have a ton of them by April 7th,” reports the email announcing the draft availability.

The Davis property on the waterfront is under development.

Police Chief Vance Haskett introduced the newest police officer with the Town of Manteo. Frank Lassen joined the town’s force after 1.5 years as a Dare County Sheriff’s Office deputy.

During department head reports, Haskett reported for the month of February 2022 the department issued 23 citations, launched 14 investigations and cleared 13, had 1,588 self-initiated calls and 105 dispatched calls.

Asked by commissioner Ruth Stetson if the police department had adequate space, Haskett responded, the department is “a little crowded.”

During public comment, the board received a proposal from the Miller family to lease Magnolia Pavilion and operate Betty’s Corner Market, “a family friendly, convenient, and comfortable environment” where customers can purchase “packaged food, beverages, local art and gifts and specialty items.”

In response to last fall’s Request for Proposals for the Pavilion, the town received one response to use part of the pavilion’s closed space. Lease negotiations have been initiated.

At the commissioners mid-March meeting, a Resolution of Solidarity with the People of Ukraine was adopted by the board.
