This raccoon (Procyon lotor) appropriated a tree hollow for shelter on Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge.

Raccoons are just one of the hundreds of wildlife and bird species found on national wildlife refuges.

Raccoons are omnivores and eat everything from frogs, fish, mice and insects, to berries, nuts, eggs and more. “Their wide diet variety and clever dexterity at reaching and obtaining food makes them adaptable to a diversity of habitats,” noted a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service press release.
