Dare commissioners highlight volunteers, pass proclamations

In honor of National Volunteer Month this April, Dare County released “Celebrating Dare County’s Volunteers,” a video highlighting the countless contributions made by the hundreds of volunteers assisting the county’s various departments throughout the year.

Department leaders said special thanks.

Parks and Recreation has over 1,000 volunteers coaching and officiating. Friends of Youth has volunteer mentors. Hot meals are delivered by volunteers in northern Dare and on Hatteras Island. Volunteer firefighters train weekly and fight fires at any time day or night. Special Olympics runs with volunteer event coordinators, coaches, trainers, officials and managers. The Community Emergency Response Team on Hatteras Island – a total volunteer operation – was saluted.

Dozens of volunteers donate time to serve on county boards, committees and commissions.

“Dare County depends on the hard work and dedication provided by its volunteers on a daily basis,” says a media release.

Dare’s commissioners unanimously passed proclamations for the following:

Week of the Young Child: April 4 through 8, 2022. The week focuses public attention on the needs of young children and their families and recognizes early childhood programs and services that meet those needs.

Public Health Week: April 4 through 10. Dare County Health’s Kelly Nettnin, Robert Preston and Heather Gardiner presented the proclamation about Public Health Week and thanked Dare’s commissioners for their support. Dare County Board of Commissioners Chairman Robert L. Woodard Sr. praised the public health staff for the work over the last two years.

In the proclamation, the board “encourages all residents to recognize that public health is working to ensure that all residents are protected from threats such as COVID-19, influenza, foodborne disease, injury, and chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and asthma.”

Fair Housing Month: Doug Brindley, president of the Outer Banks Association of Realtors, read the resolution to the board. The Fair Housing Act was passed April 11, 1968.

The document proclaims “Dare County as an inclusive community committed to fair housing, and to promoting appropriate activities by private and public entities to provide and advocate for equal housing opportunities for all residents and prospective residents of Dare County.”

Child Abuse Prevention Month: Children & Youth Partnership for Dare County with Dare County Health and Human Services sponsored a proclamation passed by the Dare County Board of Commissioners which declared April Child Abuse Prevention Month in the county. Child Abuse Prevention Month promotes awareness about the dangers of child abuse and steps to be taken to prevent it in the Dare community. States the proclamation, “effective child abuse prevention strategies succeed because of partnerships created among citizens, human service agencies, schools, faith communities, healthcare providers, civic organizations, law enforcement agencies, and the business community.”
