Dare County has announced that “Miss Katie” – the shallow-draft hopper dredge that has been under construction in Morgan City, Louisiana since March 2021 – recently reached its most significant milestone yet: the official launch of the vessel at Conrad Shipyard on April 4, 2022.

The announcement was made by Dare County commissioner Jim Tobin, who shared a video of Miss Katie’s launch in Louisiana during his remarks at the Dare County Board of Commissioners meeting held April 20, 2022.

Once the vessel is delivered to Dare County and successfully completes a series of required sea trials this summer, Miss Katie’s dredging operations will be managed by the Oregon Inlet Task Force. It will be able to operate up to 12 hours a day (weather permitting), providing the strategic dredging that is needed to keep area waterways open and navigable for commercial and recreational vessels, stated a press release from Dare County.

A christening ceremony will be held later this year to celebrate the completion of this highly-anticipated project.
