Theatre of Dare, community theater for the Outer Banks, is partnering with Porkchop Productions to offer theater summer camps for kids. Each of the five week-long sessions will feature its own unique theme and will conclude with a performance.

“We have wanted to get more young people involved with the theater, and summer camp is a great way to do that,” says Kelsey Thompson, TOD business director. “Now that we have our own space, we have many plans to utilize it and expand our activities, and the summer camp program is just one exciting part of it.”

Each camp consists of two sessions: 10 a.m.-noon for ages 6-11 and 12:30 p.m.-2:30 p.m. for ages 12-17.

Scheduled camps with descriptions of each from Theatre of Dare are:

June 13-17: Not Your Grandma’s Fairy Tales 1 – “Participants will explore characters, staging, voice, diction, movement and more as they bring fabulously fractured, and uniquely updated, fairy tales and fables to life!”

June 20-24: Ham Radio – “Participants will learn the history of radio dramas and delve into vocal interpretation, diction, and accents to bring a character to life on the air! Plus, using Porkchop Production’s ‘Foley Sound Effects Studio,’ we will use old-school objects to add the sound effects to the performance.”

July 11-15: Musical Theatre Mania! – “Participants will learn music and choreography to some of the most popular shows on Broadway. Along with some history of famous composers and choreographers, this is a full-circle musical theatre experience!”

July 18-22: FX Makeup for the Stage – “Participants will learn the history of special effects theatrical makeup, how to create their own makeup design templates, and implement techniques to create old age, character, fantasy, animal and (of course) some ooey, gooey gore! Each participant will be supplied with their own Ben Nye makeup kit to keep!”

August 8-12: Not Your Grandma’s Fairy Tales 2 – “Like the first session of camp but with different stories – participants will stretch their wings and indulge their imaginations as they bring side-splitting stories from the page to the stage!”

The cost for each session is $175 per participant, $200 for the July 18-22 makeup session. Participation is limited and registration, now open, will close two weeks prior to any given session or when the class if full, whichever comes first. Camps will be held at the theater at 3848 N. Croatan Highway, MP 4 in Kitty Hawk.

One scholarship, awarded by the Juvenile Crime Prevention Council, will be available for each session. The scholarship covers the cost of the week and will be based on need and merit. Details are available on the registration form at www.theatreofdareobx.com/summer-camps.

“Theater camp is one of our specialties,” says Stacey Maxwell, artistic director of Porkchop Productions, a professional touring children’s theater company. “The kids always have a great time – I’m really looking forward to engaging them in the performing arts!”
