Manteo High School’s varsity softball team closed out the month of April with an easy win over Hertford County Friday.

Playing at Ahoskie April 29, the visiting Manteo Redskins scored both early and often in each of the first three innings for a 16-0 lead. Leading the Redskins with multiple base hits were Erika Bailey, Brooklyn Creef and Bridgett Berry, along with Jill Leary who had a home run.

Hertford avoided a shutout in the bottom of the third with three runs only to have Manteo widen the gap with two more runs in the fourth.

When the home team Bears failed to score again, Manteo claimed the win based on a rule ending the game when one team establishes a double-digit lead over the other.

Pleased with the win, Manteo coach Chad Leary said he thought one thing that helped was that his whole team hit well.

“I think as a whole,” he explained, “everyone hit the ball well. That also helped so we could move some girls around to other positions.”

According to coach Leary that second inning home run by his daughter Jill Leary was the fifth this season for the Manteo junior giving her 11 career homers.

Other action for the day saw the Manteo varsity baseball team grab a five-inning 10-0 win over Hertford County.

Friday’s win gives Manteo softball team an 8-9 season, Hertford County softball is now 1-14 overall.
