Manteo High School’s Stage Left Productions will present The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The musical opens Friday, May 6 and will be performed in the Manteo High School Auditorium, located at 829 Wingina Avenue in Manteo.

“Hunchback is based off of the classic Disney musical, but brings in elements from the original novel which were not featured in the film,” says Stuart Parks, the director of the show. The tale is centered around Quasimodo, a deformed young man who lives in the belltower of Notre Dame under the care of his stern and domineering uncle, the Archdeacon Frollo. Quasimodo is afraid of, but longs to visit, the world outside and in doing so meets a cast of characters – including the kind Esmeralda – that change his world and Paris forever. “The classic songs from the animated feature are here, as are the themes of kindness, acceptance, and justice. The show is captivating, the songs stay with you, and the whole experience is a very full package, from humor to sadness and love to loss. It has been an honor to direct this wonderful, talented cast and I would urge the whole family to come out and see this production.”

Stage Left Productions is working in conjunction with Theatre of Dare to help bring The Hunchback of Notre Dame to life. “Manteo High School went out of their way to allow Theatre of Dare the use of their performance space for our 32nd Season Opener of Little Shop of Horrors last October,” says Parks, who is also president of Theater of Dare. “In return, they asked that Theatre of Dare come back to help the students to produce their own Spring Musical.” Covid shut down live performances across the country, and it has only been recently that stages have been opening to the public again. “These students love performing and they haven’t had the chance to do so or entertain a live audience in years. We at Theater of Dare know that need and longing very well, and we are proud of the opportunity to step up and help these kids, and Manteo High, return to the stage.”
