Springtime education programs offered at NPS sites

At Cape Hatteras National Seashore’s three sites, a program called Shaping These Barrier Islands is offered from 2:30 to 3 p.m. Wars, hurricanes and ocean currents have all had impacts on the shores of Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

At Bodie Island Lighthouse, the program is offered on Wednesday and Thursday. Meet on the back porch of the keeper’s quarters

At the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, the program is offered Monday through Friday. Meet at the Hatteras Island Visitor Center Pavilion at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse.

On Ocracoke, the program is offered Monday through Thursday. Meet outside the Ocracoke Island Discovery Center.

At Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, a Lost Colony walking tour is offered daily at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Meet outside the Lindsay Warren Visitor Center and delve into the history and mystery surrounding England’s first attempt to establish a colony in the new world.

At Wright Brothers National Memorial, take in a program called “Wind and Sand,” offered daily at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Meet outside the back doors of the visitor center and step back in history during this short walk to the actual site of the Wright’s first powered flights. Discover why the Wrights chose this location for their flight experiments and what life was like on the Outer Banks and learn about the events that led to the first powered flight on that cold December day and the lasting impact of their achievement.
