NC 12 will reopen between Oregon Inlet and the village of Rodanthe at noon on Thursday, May 12.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation crews have been working through the morning to clear the road and reconstruct protective dunes and berms at both the Pea Island Visitor Center and at the “S-Curves” just north of Rodanthe.

“Motorists should be aware that while passable, there will be areas of the highway with standing water and sand on the road,” stated an NCDOT press release. “Drivers should exercise extreme caution and slow down when traveling through those areas.”

There is still a possibility that this afternoon’s high tide, at approximately 5:15 p.m., may require another closure if major overwash occurs, reports NCDOT.
