To the Editor:

The North Carolina General Assembly has a unique opportunity this short session to strengthen rural hospitals, give 600,000 North Carolinians health coverage and pull in $2 billion dollars in federal funds if they expand Medicaid and close the coverage gap.

I am asking Representative Bobby Hanig and Senator Bob Steinburg to support Medicaid expansion and accept this extra money. I am a wife, mother and grandmother and I believe everyone should have basic healthcare. As a person of faith, I want to help those in need. Our society is prosperous and can provide for the basic medical needs for the uninsured. I urge you to close the gap in North Carolina. To me, providing medical care for 600,000 is a “no brainer.” I live in a rural community and Medicaid expansion will help hospitals keep their doors open and keep jobs in rural areas.

My husband is a veteran and served in Viet Nam. Medicaid Expansion is endorsed by the Veterans of Foreign Wars in North Carolina. Our veterans are suffering and we must help as many as possible. I urge you to do the right thing and help our vets.

I urge my representatives to find a unique North Carolina solution to close our state’s coverage gap once and for all. Accept the Medicaid money and save lives, our community cannot afford to wait on health care any longer.
