Memorial Day is an annual federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May. Originally called Decoration Day, it originated during the American Civil War when people placed flowers on the graves of those who had been killed in battle with than a half dozen places claiming to be the birthplace of the holiday.

Memorial Day was declared a national holiday through an act of Congress in 1971 and while the weekend unofficially marks the beginning of the summer vacation season, the actual purpose is to remember the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

In observance of the Memorial Day holiday, all Outer Banks municipal and county offices will be closed with several ceremonies scheduled to pay homage to our nation’s veterans.
