Fishing program offers fun for whole family

The Holmes family of Tennessee, first time visitors to Dare County, sampled some of the best the Outer Banks has to offer this week. On Thursday morning, they enjoyed the family fishing program at Jennette’s Pier where they caught fish and made memories.

This multi-generational group has gotten out and about quite a bit sampling fresh seafood including soft crabs and watching wild horses in Corolla since arriving in Nags Head. They soaked in salt air while staying at an oceanfront hotel.

Next up? Trips to the Wright Brothers National Memorial and Jockey’s Ridge State Park. Like Jennette’s Pier, Jockey’s Ridge falls under the North Carolina Department of Natural and Culture Resources, which is currently celebrating its 50^th anniversary.

The Holmeses were able to cherry pick the best thanks to some online research by daughter Melissa Jones of Franklin, Tenn. While she waited for the bite to come, she explained that she had done her homework before heading out to the coast.

Relaxing on the bench next to her mom Marlene, the pair occasionally checked their bait before throwing out again with fresh shrimp bits.

Across the pier, “Papa” was hooked up. Family patriarch Scott Holmes had a nice sea mullet. His granddaughter Lila looked on. As he struggled with removing the short-shanked circle hook, instructor Meredith Fish came over to lend a hand with some trusty pliers.

The fish was released unharmed. Asked what she liked best about the Outer Banks so far, Lila said, “the beach!” Scott said he liked the horses in Corolla and then asked if he pronounced the town’s name correctly, which he had.

They were excited about possibly heading to “Marine Mayberry” Manteo and had firm plans to trek out to the NC Black Bear Festival in Plymouth for the weekend where, they also plan to dine on some good ole fashioned Carolina barbecued pig.

As the for the class, they seemed pleased with the equipment, bait and instruction, which are all included in the $20 fee. This summer, the family fishing program is offered every Tuesday and Thursday at 9 a.m.
