Members of the Class of 2022 and their families gathered for the Cape Hatteras Secondary School Senior Celebration on May 25, 2022. The festive event was held at the Hatteras Village Civic Center, where families set tasty food offerings on the serving tables.

Scholarship presenters brought $211,895 in scholarships to the 41-member Class of 2022.

Some scholarships are memorials to teachers and administrators, like the Elvin Hooper Memorial Scholarship, offered for the first time this year. Hooper was a long-time teacher at the Hatteras Island school. Other memorial scholarships honor family members.

Four island civic associations award scholarships as do businesses and county-wide organizations. Some scholarships are earmarked for health fields of study.

At the end of the awards, Cape Hatteras Secondary’s principal Beth Rooks said, “a lot of love, passion and care” is behind these scholarships. “Believe in yourself” and “always know you have a home.”
