Those exploring Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge might see a flash of blue from a blue grosbeak or yellow from a prothonotary warbler. But when it comes to a flash of red, besides a male Northern cardinal, one might see the male summer tanager (Piranga rubra), which is the only totally red bird in North America, according to USFWS.
