There are a variety of 4th of July events taking place throughout Currituck, Dare and Hyde counties this weekend to celebrate our nation’s independence. Check out one or many!

Currituck County:

Monday, July 4: Currituck County Department of Travel & Tourism is hosting the annual Independence Day Celebration at Historic Corolla Park. Parking opens at 3 p.m. and is free, but is expected to fill up early. Family activities begin at 5 p.m., with live music performed by The Black and Blue Experience Band and food available from Mr. Joes Fun Food, Fork’et Me Not, On the Spot Creamery and OBX Popcorn Shoppe. Fireworks will be launched over the Currituck Sound and will be visible from boats and many waterfront sites on the mainland side.

No coolers, alcohol or on-street parking are permitted in the park. The Historic Corolla Park boat ramp is closed this day with no docking allowed. Dogs are permitted on leashes.

On the Currituck mainland, the Currituck Historical Society will sponsor the annual Kid’s Parade on July 4 at the Currituck Courthouse at 10 a.m.  The first 100 children to show up for the even will receive a new $2 bill from TowneBank. Prizes, a reading of the Declaration of Independence and refreshments will be a part of the festivities and the public is invited.

Dare County:

Residents are happy to see the return of the Town of Duck 4th of July Parade and Community Celebration on Monday, July 4 at 10 a.m. The annual one-mile parade route begins at the crest of the hill on Scarborough Lane, travels east towards the ocean, turns left onto Ocean Way and then continues onto Christopher Drive to end at Pamela Court. No part of the parade will take place on Duck Road. Immediately following the parade, a community celebration will be held at the Duck Town Park featuring live music, refreshments and parade awards.

The Town of Kill Devil Hills is offering its annual fireworks show at Avalon Pier on Monday, July 4 at Avalon Pier, located at 2111 North Virginia Dare Trail, at 9:15 p.m. The event will be livestreamed on the town’s YouTube and Facebook pages @townofkdh. The rain date will be July 5.

Down at milepost 11.5, the Town of Nags Head and Nags Head Fishing Pier are hosting the annual 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular at Nags Head Pier, located at 3335 S. Virginia Dare Trail, beginning at 9:25 p.m. on Monday night. Visitors are encouraged to park east of U.S. Highway 158/South Croatan Highway. Fireworks may also be viewed from the top of Jockey’s Ridge State Park, which will be open late for visitors. The Town of Nags Head requests that those attending the show use the public beach accesses as pathways to the oceanfront, respect private property, stay off the dunes and not block driveways. Vehicles are not allowed on the beach. Nags Head recommends the following beach accesses south of the pier to view the fireworks: Curlew Street, Hollowell Street and Conch Street; and the following accesses north of the pier: Bladen Street, Bittern Street, Bonnett Street and Blackman Street. The rain date will be July 5.

Festivities are plenty in Downtown Manteo this year starting at 3 p.m. on July 4. The events kick off at 3 p.m. with an apple pie contest, kid’s decorated bike, scooter, wagon and trike parade, and fun family games. Apple pies can be brought to the contest tent beside the Dare County Arts Council (the old courthouse) at 2:30 p.m. on July 4. The Deloreans and the 82nd Airborne Division Band and Chorus will perform at Roanoke Island Festival Park starting at 5:15 p.m. and the evening will conclude with a bang with a fireworks display over Shallowbag Bay.

On Hatteras Island in Avon, Independence Day celebrations are taking place on the Avon Pier on Monday, July 4. Events are presented by Avon Beach Club and Radio Hatteras FM 101.5 and 99.9. The spectacular fireworks show can be viewed over Cape Hatteras National Seashore beaches.

Hyde County:

Ocracoke has a full weekend of events beginning on Saturday, July 2 with a pre-firework gathering at 6 p.m. with deejay Tommy Hutcherson spinning patriotic tunes at the National Park Service (NPS) docks. Fireworks will begin at 9:15, launched from the NPS parking lot at the southern end of the island.

Sunday, July 3 will feature an island-wide scavenger hunt from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sign up at Spencer’s Market porch. Later that evening from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., join Molasses Creek for an old fashioned Ocracoke square dance in the Berkley Barn.

The festivities continue on Monday with a NPS talk about local ponies and their heritage at 9:30 a.m. The sand sculpture contest runs from 9:30 to noon, followed by lighthouse viewing (no climbing) from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. The Old Time Independence Parade kicks off at 4 p.m. at Wheelie Fun Golf Carts and ends at the NPS parking lot. This year’s theme is “famous duos.” Cash prizes available for walk & roll, wheels, float and best theme. Sign up at 3 p.m. at Wheelie Fun Golf Carts. The evening continues with the singing of the National Anthem and award presentation beginning at 5:30 p.m., followed by storytelling with Donald Davis. Both events will be held at the Books to be Red stage; bring your own chairs. End the weekend with the community beach fire at the NPS Lifeguard Beach. Bring marshmallows to roast under the stars, as well as chairs/blankets. All activities are sponsored by Ocracoke Occupancy Tax Board, Hyde County, Ocracoke Civic & Business Association and the Ocracoke Tourism Development Authority.
