Steve Blackstock was sworn in as interim superintendent for Dare County Schools on July 1, 2022.

He has wide-ranging educational experience, including working at elementary, middle and high school levels at First Flight and Manteo schools for 14 years as a teacher, coach, bus driver and administrator. He also took a turn in student nutrition.

For the last two and half years, he served in Hyde County Schools and was responsible for career and technical education, K-12 instructional programs, testing and accountability. He recently served as interim superintendent in that school system as well.

He arrived in Dare County in 2002 after teaching middle and high school music.

In a brief email to the DCS [Dare County Schools] community, Blackstock stated “I believe each of those experiences will equip me to help bring DCS through this transition in district leadership in a way that prioritizes providing an excellent education for our students.”

He pledged to visit each school during this month.

“In July I will be visiting each school, meeting with each principal, and informally meeting as many staff as I can. Understanding the context of each community in our district is essential for me to join in leading our schools as we prepare for the selection of our next superintendent.”

That process has started.

Dare County Board of Education Chairman David Twiddy appointed Mary Ellon Ballance as chair of the Superintendent Search Committee and board members Susan Bothwell and Carl Woody to serve with Ballance. The committee will held its first meeting on Tuesday, July 12 at the administrative offices of the school system, located at 3020 Wrightsville Ave. in Nags Head.
