By Olivia Patchel, Currituck Extension

Taking the time to plan, plant and tend to a garden can be very fun and relaxing. But what do you do when it comes time to harvest and you are up to your eyeballs in produce? Sign up for NC Cooperative Extension, Currituck County Center’s Home Food Preservation Series and learn to can all the produce you harvest. Join us from noon to 2 p.m. for a hands-on food preservation experience. Each class requires a $15 registration fee, which includes canning goodies and recipes. Check out the dates and class descriptions below to see which classes you might want to attend then visit: 2022foodpreservationseriespart2.eventbrite.com to reserve your seat!

July 27th – Pressure Canning

Get the latest headlines sent to you

Low-acid vegetables need to reach a higher temperature during the preservation process to ensure that they are safe to store on the shelf. Learn more about pressure canning, how to do it safely, why we do it and what produce requires pressure canning in our pressure canning class. Not only will you learn these skills, but you will put them to the test when we prepare and pressure can our own vegetables.

August 24th – Dehydration

Another great way to make produce shelf-stable is to dehydrate it! Learn how to prep items, use a dehydrator, and experiment with other ways to dehydrate products for those who may not have a dehydrator. Then prep several different items to be dehydrated.

Reserve your seat today by completing the class registration and payment at 2022foodpreservationseriespart2.eventbrite.com. We are accepting cash and check payments in addition to paying via credit card through Eventbrite. Make checks payable to NCSU. Checks and cash payments can be received at the Currituck Extension Office located at 120 Community Way in Barco within five days of registration. Class size is limited and full registration, including payment, is required to hold your spot. If you have any problems registering, please feel free to call us at 252-232-2261 and we will walk you through the process.
