As the completion of their new Lake Comfort substation nears, the Swan Quarter Volunteer Fire Department (SQVFD) has also been busy designing the logo for the facility.

The Lake Comfort area of Hyde County lies along US 264 between two other well-known communities: Swindell’s Fork to the west and New Holland to the east. The new station is on NC 94, near the intersection of US 264.

The Hyde County History Book (1976) gives a brief description of the area as a place where “the waters of Lake Mattamuskeet coming from the north, east, south, and west became still behind the woods and rested in the shallow part of the lake.”

Using an overall design similar to the logo for the current Swan Quarter station, the center of the Lake Comfort Station logo features a Cypress tree standing in the waters of Lake Mattamuskeet surrounded by cypress knees. Two arrowheads take into consideration the Native American history of the area and the four compass points represent the description given in the history book. Additionally, the black and gold colors that are incorporated in the design mirror the promotional colors used by the nearby Mattamuskeet Schools.

Fire Chief Jeffrey Stotesberry pointed out that “we wanted to honor the Lake Comfort community, its history and heritage, with this design. We tried out several different designs, finally settling on the one we thought best represented this area.”

Ground-breaking for the facility was held on July 17, 2021 and construction began on January 11, 2022 with the clearing of the land and has progressed steadily. When completed, the 5,086 square foot facility will serve approximately 200 homes with 400 occupants and twenty-two businesses in the SQVFD’s district. Due to the distance from the current SQVFD station on Oyster Creek Road, these property owners were not previously in a “rated” fire district. That will change once the new facility is certified and as a result, their property insurance rates will drop accordingly.

Once the SQVFD takes possession of the new building, a formal dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony will be scheduled. Stotesberry indicated that “we are planning a celebration for the entire community which will probably take place in August.”
