Outer Banks Association of REALTORS® (OBAR) member Jeff Malarney, of Malarney & McCown, has been appointed to serve as the vice chair of the North Carolina Real Estate Commission (NCREC) by NC Governor Roy Cooper. As a current member of the NCREC, this will be Malarney’s fourth term, having previously served as both vice chair and chair of the commission in 2018 and 2019.

“I feel honored to be elected as the vice chair, and to serve licensees from across the state and, in particular, those individuals that practice in eastern North Carolina,” said Malarney. “I’m especially excited to be leading the initiative to improve and modernize the Vacation Rental Act. This fall, I anticipate convening an advisory committee to assist in identifying current issues and later drafting legislation to update this twenty-year-old legislation.”

Malarney will begin serving this position in August.

“We are so fortunate to have a voice on the NC Real Estate Commission,” said Doug Brindley, OBAR president. “Our market, both sales, and property management, is so unique to North Carolina and to the east coast.

“Property management is such a vital part of the economy of the Outer Banks, and I am excited that we have a local voice to represent our needs concerning the outdated Vacation Rental Act and other related legislation,” Brindley continued.

Malarney has lived on the Outer Banks for 27 years. His areas of expertise include law, property insurance and he is a licensed REALTOR®.  Malarney is a retired commander of the U.S. Navy Judge Advocate Corps and been general counsel for one of the largest vacation rental companies in the nation, stated an OBAR press release. He has operated a mortgage brokerage company, an insurance agency and was instrumental in the creation of H2OBX Waterpark. Malarney is a past president of the North Carolina Vacation Rental Managers Association (NCVRMA) and chairman of the Outer Banks Chamber of Commerce.
