The formal search for a new Dare County Schools superintendent kicks off Monday, August 1, 2022.

At a special July 28 meeting, the full Dare County Board of Education approved a search packet including a position profile, a stakeholder survey and an application for superintendent of schools.

Prospective candidates have until September 1, 2022 to file the application.

The public has until August 15 to participate in the survey. Survey results will be used to construct candidate interview questions.

The survey asks the respondent to select as many categories as apply: parent/guardian of Dare County Schools (DCS) student(s); community partner/supporter; current DCS certified staff member; current DCS classified staff member, current DCS student; or former DCS parent, student and staff member.

The first two survey queries list the same 11 areas of concern such as communication, fiscal management, school atmosphere, technology. On the first question, the survey asks the importance of the characteristics within the district. The second question asks how important the areas should be to an incoming superintendent. The third question lists 17 characteristics and asks how important each characteristic is for an incoming superintendent.

Responders are provided three response choices to these questions: important, least important, not important. An open-ended question is the last one: “Other Comments?”

The board’s new attorney, Rachel Hitch with Poyner Spruill in Raleigh, attended this meeting. Completed candidate applications will go to her. Applications will be available at daretolearn.org.

At this meeting, the board approved a personnel consent agenda that listed 28 new employees including teachers, a school treasurer, two custodians and teacher assistants. Additionally, the approved consent agenda revealed that Joseph Tyson will be assistant principal at First Flight High School. His contract runs through 2026.

Two employees are retiring: Bob May, IT systems administrator, on Nov. 1, 2022 and Beverly Twyne, a teacher at Manteo Elementary, on Jan. 1, 2023.

Four people resigned with effective dates in June, two in July and one in August.

Ten employees received internal transfers; one substitute teacher was approved as were four coaches.
