David Hallac, superintendent of National Parks of Eastern North Carolina, will talk about endangered oceanfront housing in Rodanthe on Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2022, starting at 6:30 p.m.

Dare commissioner Danny Couch, who is from Hatteras Island, will join Hallac.

The talk will be held at the Rodanthe-Waves-Salvo Community Building, located at 23646 NC 12 in Rodanthe, opposite the historic Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station.

Hallac’s job assignment includes the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

The Rodanthe-Waves-Salvo Civic Association is sponsoring the talk and the public is invited to attend.

Three houses on Ocean Drive in Rodanthe have collapsed on Cape Hatteras National Seashore beaches sending debris southward as far as Buxton.

One house collapsed during the early morning hours of Feb. 9, 2022 and two houses leaning into the ocean finally collapsed on Tuesday, May 10, 2022.

The second house at 24235 Ocean Drive hit the water in the early morning hours that day. Waves regularly washed under the structure, built in 1985.

The third house at 24265 Ocean Drive was lost to the ocean around 1 p.m., Tuesday, May 10. The house was built in 1980.
