Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

By Mike Caton

John 18:34, “Is that your own idea,” Jesus asked, “or did others talk to you about me?”

Pilate asked Jesus if he was the king of the Jews. And Jesus asks Pilate where he is getting his information. That is an important question for us to consider in our lives as well. Where do you learn about Jesus? What formed and shaped your ideas and thoughts about Christ? Who taught you the things you know about him?

There seem to be far too many people today who were taught about Jesus on Facebook, the internet or from some other source. Or maybe they simply have formed their own ideas about who God is, or who they want him to be. Or maybe they are simply remembering what their parents or grandparents told them. Listen, I am thankful for each and every resource available today to learn the truth about God. There are many faithful men and women out there who are committed to sharing the word of God with those around them. But there are also many who are not so trustworthy. And so, we need to be very careful about who we listen to. The Berean Christians are among my heroes. We don’t know one of their names, but their actions certainly make them stand out. Luke writes in Acts 17:11, “Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.”

I hope and pray that each one of us will do the same thing, that we will not simply take someone’s word for the truth about God. But that we will examine the Scripture for ourselves, that we will dig a little deeper, that we will check out what we are taught. I realize this is a tough thing to be committed to, it is so much easier to just believe what someone posts on the internet or sends in an email. But your soul is at stake. The standard we need to use is the Bible, as someone said, it is our only rule for faith and practice.
Father, help me seek your truth. In Jesus’ name, amen.
