At 10:10 a.m. on September 1, 2022, a 2006 Pontiac Vibe crossed the center line on U.S. 158 – also known as Short Cut Road – in Currituck County.

Mark Johnston, 57, of Nags Head, was driving that vehicle, which crashed head-on into a Camden County school bus heading west, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

When Currituck Fire and EMS arrived, Johnston was entrapped in the vehicle with critical injuries. He was extricated from the vehicle, “but while on scene, succumbed to injuries sustained from the accident,” states a report on Facebook from Currituck County Department of Fire and EMS.

One student was on the bus that was returning to Camden County from the College of The Albemarle campus in Maple. The school bus had major front-end damage. The student and driver were evaluated for injuries and refused transport to a hospital.

The investigation is underway by the State Highway Patrol. “It may have been caused by medical emergency,” said First Sgt. E.J. Forbes.

Johnston was an Outer Banks radio personality. Rick Loesch, owner of East Carolina Radio, said he had worked with Johnston for 25 years. At the time of his death, Johnston was broadcasting for 102.5 the Shark.

A third vehicle was involved. The driver maneuvered to get out of the way and in doing so slid the side of the vehicle along a guard rail.

First responders from the Currituck County Department of Fire and EMS, Crawford Volunteer Fire Department in Currituck County, Currituck County Sheriff’s Office and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol reported to the scene. Nightingale Regional Air Ambulance was alerted to the wreck. Moyock Volunteer Fire Department was requested to respond with additional manpower, but was called back.
