John 19:10, “Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?”

Why would Jesus not speak to Pilate? Pilate says he has the power to free Jesus or to kill him. Jesus responds to that in the next verse, so we will not get ahead of ourselves just yet. But why didn’t Jesus answer Pilate’s question? Would you have answered his question?

I’ll bet many would love to have answered Pilate’s questions. You know, it seems many people have a real tendency to argue and want the last word. It really doesn’t matter what the issue is, how big or small it might be, whether it makes any difference or not, some folks just like to argue about it. Maybe they will mutter something under their breath at the last moment, in their mind getting in the last word. Again, the issue may not be really important. Now I know there are some things that are worth fighting over, there are just some stands that you need to take, and even some you need to be willing to die for.

But as I look at life, it is becoming much more clear to me what is important and what is not. And so often, the issue is simply not worth the hassle. So, many times, it is more simple and more peaceful to simply not respond. Someone has said, you do not have to attend every argument you are invited to. Some folks are not going to change their minds, some issues are not going to be resolved, and all you will be doing is stirring things up. That will likely just cause more drama, which is something no one needs any more of. I guess the key here is to pick your battles. And remember what Paul said in Romans 12:18 – If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.

Father, help me know when to speak and when to be quiet. In Jesus’ name, amen.
