A cool summer day with an excellent crowd coupled with over 40 east coast artists made for the perfect first day of the 40th Annual New World Festival of the Arts, which was held on the Manteo waterfront from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, August 16 and Wednesday, August 17.

Outer Banks fiber artist Beth Burns judged this year’s New World Festival of the Arts. Paintings, photography, sculpture, jewelry, woodwork, ceramics, glasswork, basketry and resin work were some of the media she observed.

“I thoroughly enjoyed the show as it has such a wide variety of work for all to see and enjoy,” said Burns. “The price points range from widely affordable to gallery level pieces. The Manteo waterfront provides the perfect backdrop for an outdoor art show, and the weather is fully cooperating this year.”

Burns carefully selected the following winners:

Best In Show – Tyson Andrews from Wallace, NC (woodwork)

Second Place – Barbara Umbel from Indian Harbour Beach, Fla. (jewelry)

Third Place – Paul Shampine from Newtown, Conn. (mixed media)

Honorable Mentions – David Yuan from Virginia Beach, Va. (oil paintings), Clara Moseley from Kill Devil Hills (ceramics), Noah Snyder from Kitty Hawk (fractal wood-burning and acrylic paint) and Amy Snowden and Anna Lee from Kill Devil Hills (jewelry)

“I selected Tyson Andrews from Northstar Wood Art as Best In Show because of the fine craftsmanship of his work,” added Burns. “Each piece was unusual and so well executed. I have never seen such intricate cutting boards, and the hidden compartments in the jewelry boxes were so unique.”

This year was Tyson Andrews’ first time participating in the New World Festival of the Arts.

“Wow, I am completely shocked and flattered to win the Best In Show award,” said Andrews. “The show has been so great and the positive feedback I have received on my work has been overwhelming. I can’t wait to come back to Manteo for this show next year!”

The New World Festival of the Arts is the longest-running outdoor art show on the Outer Banks. It was established in 1982 by Edward Greene and Claire Grieves to provide local and regional artists the opportunity to display and sell their creative work, while acquainting visitors with the historic Town of Manteo.

The event was sponsored by the Town of Manteo and supported by the North Carolina Arts Council, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.
