More than 40 League of Women Voters members and guests gathered at Sanctuary Vineyards on August 27 to mark the 102nd anniversary of the 1920 adoption of the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. “This day has been called Women’s Equality Day for decades, but this year the name ‘Inequality Day’ was adopted because women are still fighting to achieve such rights as equal pay and reproductive justice,” stated a Dare LWV press release.

Over glasses of local wine, the day was commemorated through a series of three-minute talks that illuminated the accomplishments of women who have inspired the women’s rights movement for centuries. The individuals highlighted came from all eras and included Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Sojourner Truth, Megan Rapinoe, Francis Ellen Watkins Harper, Serena Williams and Nina Simone.

“The event was so successful that it may become an annual occurrence,” stated the release. “As Dare League members prepare to help get out the vote for the 2022 midterm elections, the gathering was a reminder of how much can be achieved through voter education and engagement.”
