Sailing festival returns to Frisco for second year

The second annual Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Sailing Festival is a weekend full of sailing, surfing, food and entertainment.

All events and racing are open to the public. Hatteras Island locals and visitors are welcome. Learn about competitive sailing and cheer on Hatteras sailors.

The weekend’s festivities are hosted by Frisco Woods Campground. This end-of-season regatta getaway weekend is designed with something for everyone. Adults and juniors are invited to participate in all the fun activities.

Check out the schedule for a beach bonfire party, sailboat racing, a band party and a low country boil.

Friday, Sept. 23 – 5 p.m. check in and beach bonfire party, oceanside ramp 49 for a bonfire, swimming, surfing, s’mores and fire roasted hot dogs.

Saturday, Sept. 24 – 9:30 a.m. breakfast, skippers meeting. 11 a.m. first sailing session. Lunch. Second sailing session.

4 p.m. Build your own boat race. 6 p.m. low country boil dinner. Dance party

Sunday, Sept. 25 – 9 a.m. sailing sessions. Award ceremony at 3 p.m.

The Saturday afternoon Boatbuilders Challenge is to build your own boat according to the competition rules and compete against other registrants to race your boat. Other awards are offered for creativity, innovation, presentation and execution. The event is part of the 2022 Cape Hatteras Lighthouse One Design Sailing Festival and is intended to be a fun event for the entire community of the Outer Banks. There is no age limit or team size limit.

The rules are 1) no wood, 2) no fiberglass, 3) no metal, 4) no environmental footprint; if you sink, clean up your boat bits.

The competition is a shallow water buoy race up and back around the marks.
